Laden with more bilums (gifted handmade bags) than they could pack and fighting kulau (coconut milk) addictions, Panango's first team of volunteers returned to the US in September, 2008 after a successful summer teaching on Karkar Island, PNG. The ten volunteers taught in four primary schools and a secondary school on the northern "Waskia" side of the island and lived with host families in local villages. Welcom bak, na tank yupela tru!
Panango welcomes 16 new recruits to this summer's teaching tour, June 27th-Sept. 6! Volunteers will teach in 8 schools on both the Waskia and Takia sides of Karkar in addition to individual projects in HIV/AIDS awareness and equipping a computer lab at Karkar Secondary School.
Program Director Heather Heistand will be blogging the Panango teaching experience on Karkar this summer. Check in for weekly updates: Notes from the Field
